What is Real Success And How To Achieve it by Eric Barker?

If I ask you who, according to you, is a successful person? For sure, your answer will be Rich businessmen like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, etc. But, is this a real success? Well, before reading this book, if someone had asked me this question, I would have given the same answer. Because as same as others, I too used to measure success by only one metric, that is money.

But after reading the books by authors like Eric Barker, my whole perspective changed. At least to some extent. For example, if being successful is all about having money, then Warren Buffet is a successful person with lots of money. Right? Now, imagine that somehow you get a chance to switch your life with Warren Buffett; you’ll get all his money that is around $96 billion, but you will become 90-year-old Warren Buffett. Will you do this? I don’t know about you, but I’ll never do this. Although I know that money is important and I want to become rich too, but not this way. Money alone is not everything and never will be.

What is Real Success?

Then, what do we require to do to achieve real success? Because earning a lot of money is not the right answer at all. Well, a study by researchers answers this question. The study shows that, actually, you only need to focus on 4 areas to feel successful. And the areas are ACHIEVEMENT, LEGACY, SIGNIFICANCE, and HAPPINESS. When you focus on these four areas, you’ll get four different feelings. They are important because they will actually make you feel successful and will make you successful too.

How To Achieve Real Success?

Will this really be a real success? Let us understand these with a better example.

The first area to achieve real success is to believe that you will win. Because this is the only thing that will really make you win. It all depends on the mindset. Ask yourself this question, “Do you feel like you are winning in your life?”

If your answer is yes, that’s awesome, but if not, then I will suggest you do one thing. Make a to-do list every morning, and complete them by the end of the day. Set up small goals daily and finish them. Learn something new, read books, and try giving and fulfilling small commitments. And most important, always remember that you’ll win.

It is very important to keep moving forward with a positive mindset. Try to develop a Winning Attitude.

No one can destroy iron, but its own rust can; Likewise, no one can destroy a person but his own mindset can.

The second area of achieving real success is influence. For example; There have been more than 100 billion births on this earth so far, but how many of them are there, whom we remember even after their death? There are only a few souls whom the whole world remembers. Mother Teresa was one of those few people.

Do you think Mother Teresa was a successful person? Well, she didn’t have much money, and sometimes she didn’t even have money to eat. But still, she used to help poor people and fed them as well, for which she also got the Nobel prize in 1979. Even though she didn’t have a lot of money, she was still successful because she had left her legacy before she left. Legacy itself gives the second most important feeling of being successful, which is called influence.

The second question that you need to ask yourself is, “Are you influencing someone positively?” If you’re not being able to help someone with money and all, then at least get this feeling by sharing good thoughts.

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.

The third area of achieving real success is being needed. Feeling significant was the only reason that a boy, who used to work in a general store; a poor uneducated boy found a law book in a box of old things kept in his neighbor’s garden and started reading. He learned so many new things from the book that he later became President of America. I guess you know that boy’s name. Yes, he was Abraham Lincoln.

Tony Robbins, widely regarded as the best speaker and life coach, has the idea of 6 human needs; He also talks about the significance (that is, the feeling of being needed) as one of the most important human needs. But always remember, someone needs you for the right things. For example, if someone needs you for a robbery or to get drunk, etc. Is not a real significance because it won’t benefit you in the long run.

So, the third question that you need to ask yourself is, ‘Do you feel ‘needed?” If not by others, at least you’re fulfilling your family’s needs. Because sometimes the feeling of being needed by someone you care about is enough for real success. You can also achieve this by helping someone regularly, working as a volunteer, working for a foundation, etc.

The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance—and then small steps and small victories along your way will take on greater meaning.

The last area of achieving real success is whether you are enjoying your life. The study that I told you about also shows that many people make a lot of money but are not able to feel happiness. And the reason behind this is; throughout their life, their entire focus is only on making money, which gives them lots of money but not happiness. Yes, this is just like a paradox. (Paradox Meaning: A statement or proposition which, despite sound reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to a conclusion that seems logically unacceptable or self-contradictory.)

But the way to get rid of this problem is to earn money in that work which not only gives you money but also gives you happiness. That means working on your passion. So always try to work on your passion.

So, the last question that you need to ask yourself is, “Are you happy in your life?” If not, then do more things that deliver you happiness. It can be anything like meeting your friends, traveling, working on your passion, etc.

Choose to be happy, that is the only way to find happiness.
